Barbier was a leading commercial artist of the early 20th century, his work a bridge between the organic Art Nouveau style and the more streamlined Art Deco. He was a tastemaker who, in addition to costumes and sets for stage and film, created haute couture fashion plates for popular Parisian magazines such as \u003cem\u003eJournal des dames et des modes\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eGazette du bon ton\u003c\/em\u003e, for which he also wrote. Some of his most influential artwork hails from the album \u003cem\u003eLe Bonheur du Jour ou Les Grâces à la Mode\u003c\/em\u003e, for which he was both author and artist.
