CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH: BOTANICAL PAINTINGS BOXED NOTECARDS

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) may have been Scotland’s finest architect and designer, in his own time and beyond. If his paintings have not received the wide attention given to his building and interior design, it may be because he turned to painting - especially flower painting - less for public recognition than for personal satisfaction.

Mackintosh began to paint in earnest at a time when his architectural star had waned. With rich hues unseen in his earlier watercolors, these quietly exuberant paintings reveal both extensive botanical knowledge and mastery of tonal variations and color harmonies.

Borage, Walberswick, 1914
