Based on an earring from Susa (Iran) Parthian epoch, 2nd century B.C. to 2nd century A.D. (Original: gold on pitch)

To shape this elegantly simple earring, the goldsmith rolled a fine leaf of gold on a core made of pitch, a malleable material found in its natural state. This classic technique of the Ancient Orient made it possible to economize on the precious metal.
A single ring from the pair was discovered in Susa, in the archaeological strata dating back to the period of the Parthian Empire. Although the ancient city of Susa had permanently lost its status as a capital after the conquest by Alexander and the fall of the Persian Empire, it enjoyed an exceptional period of prosperity starting from the reign of the Parthian King, Mithridates the First.
