Edward Hopper (1882-1967) spent much of his life in New England. His association with the Whitney Museum was a long one too: he exhibited at its predecessor, the Whitney Studio Club, in the 1920's, and the Museum purchased his painting Early Sunday Morning for its Permanent Collection in 1931, the year it opened.

He took part in the first Whitney Biennial and showed his work in nearly every successive Biennial and Annual until his death. More than 2,500 Hopper paintings, drawings, and prints, with the documentation he kept in ledger books, are in the collection of the Whitney Museum.
