Edward Hopper: Marshall's House Print

Named after Hopper's neighbors in Truro on Cape Cod, this house was not far from the cottage he and his wife rented in 1932. Hopper's watercolor technique is at its most evocative here: by means of careful scraping out in the foreground, thin curved lines of revealed paper suggest the bristly, bleached stalks of grass waving in the breeze. The dense, nearly opaque color of the red tiled roof contrasts with the pale blue washes in the sky that suggests high clouds.
